Case Study

AC37 Media Stand

Background

The AC37 Media Stand, developed by 3D Hub, is designed to securely hold four cases containing electronics for processing audio, video, and telemetry, transmitting this information back to shore via the MHU. The stand needed to be lightweight, strong, and capable of accommodating two batteries, all within a predefined envelope and tight weight constraints.

 Solution

The AC37 Media Stand was conceived to address the specific need for a compact and efficient stand capable of securely holding four cases, one INS, and two batteries. The design process involved meticulous layout planning and multiple iterations to optimise the placement of the cases, INS, and batteries within the given envelope. Collaboration with key stakeholders was essential in refining the design, particularly in integrating the air- and water-cooled cases while addressing cabling and plumbing challenges.

The stand is constructed from Carbon Fiber, 6061-T6 aluminium (marine anodised), and PA12 Nylon. Manufacturing processes included moulded carbon fibre, CNC-machined aluminium, and MJF 3D printing. During the sample fitment phase, an unexpected issue surfaced with the battery design, necessitating adjustments to the mounting system. This challenge was swiftly addressed, with design updates leading to the production of final parts.

 Results

Initial feedback has been positive. One of the most significant challenges during development was the lack of detailed information regarding the surrounding geometry. Despite this obstacle, the project proceeded smoothly and provided valuable insights for future endeavours.
